RIP Tonightly lol

If you haven’t heard the news, our little TV show Tonightly with Tom Ballard is being sent to the farm.

It’s a bit sad but hey, it’s pretty amazing it existed in the first place.

Here’s the ABC statement on the decision.

Here’s me telling jokes about it.

Thanks so much for everyone who’s reached out this week and for anyone watching or coming along or tweeting or doing anything ever. We’ve loved making this stupid show and we’ve loved sharing it with you.

Here’s the kind of quality stuff you can expect between now and September 7th.

A Note on Tonightly’s Return

Hello.

This past week has been the roughest of my life. I’m happy to be starting a new one.

I’m fully aware that for some people, there is nothing that I can say or do that will change their perception of me or what they believe I may have done. I have accepted that. I have nothing more to say about the matter itself: everything I’ve wanted to say has been said in my original statement, here.

Tonightly will return for its second season tonight. Getting to host this show alongside a team of smart, funny and lovely people has been the highlight of my career. I love doing it, I’m proud of the work we’ve done and I am so excited about getting stuck into the business of telling dumb jokes for you again.

I think it’s important to make something clear: we’re determined to keep making the show that we want to make. We will keep making jokes that we think are funny and (sometimes) important. We will joke about what’s happening in the world, from the trivial to the deadly serious, including stories that involve sexual misconduct and the #MeToo movement. We will keep making fun of ourselves, politics, society and the shitty things that human beings say and do. We’ll keep sharing what we think is funny and we’ll keep hoping you find it funny too. Tonightly, after all, belongs to you.

Again, I reiterate that I abhor sexual violence. Absolutely no one should have to deal with sexual harassment or assault and like every other decent person in the world, I want to help in any way I can to make things better.

If you need help, you can call the National Sexual Assault, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service on 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). For help or information regarding mental health you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636.

If you have some spare cash you can donate to Rape & Domestic Violence Services Australia here.

Thank you for reading this. I’m now going to get on with living my life and doing my silly job.

Tom
